Discovering Who We Are Beyond The Beliefs That Bind Us

I’ve been contemplating the ineffable since I was 12 years old.

The Great Mystery—that which is too vast, too mysterious, too extraordinary to be captured by words; that which is always here yet cannot be grasped, defined, or contained by the thinking mind.

After all these years, I’ve come to recognize that awakening to the deeper truth of who I am, who we all are, isn’t about gaining knowledge. The deepest truth of who we all are cannot be realized through thought. It can only be experienced.

It’s becoming acquainted with the profound unthinkablity of Radiant Presence, learning to rest in the Ground of Being, the Totality of Existence.

And here’s what I found so liberating: As we learn to rest in this open awareness, we begin to loosen our identification with the conditioned mind with its myriad limiting beliefs. We discover we are no longer bound by them.

I find this exploration and practice to be the most compelling, fascinating, challenging and rewarding enterprise imaginable.

It’s an invitation available for anyone at any age or stage of life who feels drawn toward direct recognition of their True Nature. It’s how I want to live my elder years!

Not This, Not That

In the ancient wisdom tradition of Advaita Vedanta, there is a contemplative practice called neti-neti, meaning “not this, not that.” Rather than attempting to define our essential nature, the practice invites us to recognize that we are not limited to any of the changing forms of experience with which we identify.

Not merely the body.
Not our thoughts, emotions, or beliefs.
Not our age, gender, roles, or accomplishments.
Not limited by time or bound by space.
Not something that comes and goes
Not something that can be divided into separate parts.

Perhaps what remains cannot be named at all and yet, we do try!!!!
What if the deepest truth of who you are is:

Pure, unconditioned awareness.
The spaciousness in which everything arises.
The simple, undeniable presence of Being.
The ever-present mystery
of existence itself.

Beliefs That Bind Us

Recognizing our True Nature does not mean the conditioned mind suddenly disappears. We continue to live in a world of names, forms, identities, and endless descriptions of who we are, what we should be and what life is.

Through our belief filters we experience our interpretations of reality
as reality itself.

Because of my work with The Woman’s Rite film project’s exploration of limiting beliefs, let’s use these examples:

I’m too young to be taken seriously.
I’m too old to begin something new.

Whether we’re twenty-five or seventy-five, such internalized messages can become invisible fences around our possibilities. Our beliefs shape our choices, and our choices reinforce our beliefs. What began as an assumption often become self-fulfilling prophecies.

It’s easy to mistake a conditioned story about who we are and what we can
do, be, or have for the truth of who we are.

Lean Into The Mystery With Me!
This is the invitation I keep returning to. This is my practice.
Won’t you join me, even for a few seconds as you slowly read these words:

Resting in THIS Together – An Invitation To Practice Together

As much as I treasure my solitary contemplative practices, I’ve also come to appreciate the gift of resting in silent pure awareness with others. There is something profoundly nourishing about gathering without an agenda. Simply showing up, as we are, with whatever is present.

This is part of the inspiration behind The Sanctuary of Awakening, the online meditation gathering I’m offering with my dear friend Pamela. A welcoming space to explore presence, awareness, and the Mystery of Being, together.

If you are interested email georgette@lifeblessing.com and you’ll be sent all the details. Sanctuary virtual doors close October 24th, 2026.
